Remove abortion from New York's criminal law

President Trump has delivered on his promise to wage war against women.

He has tried to strip contraceptive coverage requirements from insurance, to destroy Planned Parenthood and to prohibit women held in immigration jails from getting abortions.

He’s also made it crystal clear that he wants Roe v. Wade gone.

You might be surprised to learn that New York regulates abortion access in the state criminal code.

Written almost 50 years ago, New York’s abortion law is no longer adequate to protect women. In fact, New York law regulates abortion as a crime — homicide, no less. It doesn’t meet the constitutional standard of Roe. And it’s out of step with modern medical realities. This results in delays and denials of care, in some cases forcing women to seek care out of state.

New York needs to take abortion out of the criminal code—abortion is not a crime.

In his proposed budget this year, Gov. Cuomo has included a bill that would do just that. Now we have to make sure state lawmakers follow the governor’s lead.

With President Donald Trump wanting to overturn Roe, New York needs to take abortion out of the criminal code.

TAKE ACTION: Demand state leaders decriminalize abortion in this year’s state budget.

New York should be a leader for the rest of the country, but our inadequate abortion laws don't comply with Roe v. Wade and result in delays and denials of care.
