Protect Life Act
On Passage
House Roll Call No. 789
112nd Congress, 1st Session

Passed: 251-172 (see complete tally)

On October 13, 2011, the House passed, by a vote of 251-172, the Protect Life Act (H.R. 358), introduced by Rep. Joe Pitts (R-Pa.).  H.R. 358 is a dangerous bill that would effectively ban insurance coverage of abortion in the new health care exchanges.  Contrary to existing law, H.R. 358 would also allow hospitals to refuse to provide life-saving abortion care to a pregnant woman experiencing a life-threatening complication without further regard for her health or well-being. Current federal law requires hospitals to provide appropriate medical care to a patient facing an emergency, including abortion care. (112th Congress, First Session, Roll Call Vote No. 789)
