Action Alert
Take action! Urge Painesville officials to scrap unlawful and misguided immigration policy.

Local police are supposed to protect and serve us all, but a new policy in Painesville threatens to slam the door on victims of crime and instill fear in our communities. The policy opens the door to unlawful racial profiling against people of color, immigrant families, and individuals whose primary language is not English. The policy also wrongly guides local police officers to enforce federal immigration law – a power reserved only for the federal government.

Painesville officials are making the community less safe for everyone.

Police rely on the cooperation of all people to effectively serve so it’s imperative that all people –regardless of citizenship status – feel comfortable interacting with the police. When crime victims and witnesses are afraid to call police for fear of being deported, police can’t get the information they need and crimes go unsolved. This jeopardizes everyone’s safety.

Don’t just take our word for it. Los Angeles police have reported a 25% drop in reports of sexual assault among Latina women in 2017 because of increased immigration enforcement. LA Police Chief Charlie Beck said in the LA Times, “Imagine, a young woman, imagine your daughter, your sister, your mother … not reporting a sexual assault, because they are afraid that their family will be torn apart.”

Let’s be clear: Nothing requires Painesville to pass such a policy. Local police should focus on forging strong relationships with all members of the community, not instilling fear into those who may be the victims or witnesses of crime.

This immigration policy is an unnecessary waste of time and resources that targets innocent people. Local police should focus on forging strong relationships with all members of the community, not instilling fear into those who may be the victims or witnesses of crime.

Contact Painesville officials and urge them to scrap this dangerous policy!
