Tell Christie: Shame on You

Governor Chris Christie sunk to a new low when he vetoed a bill that would end solitary confinement abuse, uphold human rights, and keep all of us safer.

The bill, S51, would have:

• Banned solitary confinement for the most vulnerable, like people with mental illnesses, pregnant women, and people with disabilities.
• Required that prisons and jails use solitary confinement only as a last resort & require medical clearance and evaluations for prisoners in solitary.
• Prohibited solitary confinement for more than 15 consecutive days or for 20 days during a 60-day period.

A society can be judged on how it treats its prisoners and its most vulnerable people. Governor Christie will not be judged favorably. Email him now to tell him he let New Jersey down.

Dear Governor Christie,

I write to express my disappointment and shame at your decision to veto S51: humane, commonsense reforms that would have ended the routine use of solitary confinement as a form of punishment.

Your callous, cynical decision will go down as a stain on your administration and an affront to human rights. I could not disagree with your decision more.
